He shows how to tell if you need bushing replacement, how to remove the keys, replace the bushing, adjust the keystop, and adjust the key actuator. Dirty key contacts are pretty common, too see the cleaning procedure, below , and a bad oscillator pops up now and then. Bad dividers are easily overlooked when testing, because if you have more than a few footages selected, they can be masked, or it will seem as though some notes just sound a little “off”.
Test procedure First turn off ALL tabs, drawbars, etc. Fractional voices, mixtures, and non-flute voices may add additional notes to confuse the procedure. To test the oscillators, turn on the highest even-numbered footage voice, usually 4′ or 2′. Play the twelve highest notes on the keyboard. If any of the notes fails to play, then you probably have a bad oscillator. To confirm this, play that same bad note in lower octaves. If it fails in all octaves, then the oscillator is bad.

A – best in its class “The best B-3’s are A ‘s” – now what does this statement mean? It points to the fact that a Hammond A organ is in fact the exact same organ as the legendary B-3, and then some. The cabinets of the A models were all, with one exception, tailored for home use: No locking top, built-in speakers and reverb, and a wider selection of wood finishes and stylings.
Also, the slimmer profile of the A cabinet especially the ‘plain Jane’ A model is prefered over the B-style cabinet for taking on the road.

Whether you’re playing on your own or as part of a band, these invaluable tools will help make your notes don’t get lost in the mix. Before picking the perfect amplifier and monitor for your setup, it’s important to understand the differences between the two. Both will produce sound, but their roles on the stage are actually quite different.
An amp will produce sound with the audience in mind, giving them the full effect of your performance. A monitor will produce sound with the artist in mind, allowing you to hear your performance clearly and make any necessary adjustments with ease. Keyboard amplifiers and monitors are offered in a variety of sizes, so it should be relatively easy to find ones that suit your needs.
Smaller speakers, as a general rule, offer serious punch and clarity, while larger speakers bring added power to your lower end. Since differently sized speakers play different roles, it’s not as simple as saying “bigger is better. When choosing your monitor, you are going to have to make a decision between what is referred to as a powered or unpowered system.
Basically, powered monitors combine your speakers and amp into one unit, simplifying your setup. On the other hand, an unpowered monitor will require an amp to plug into, this will offer you more flexibility as you mix and match.

It’s a Leslie speaker cabinet — an effects cabinet, really — made by Fender from It adds a phasing or chorusing effect to your amplifier’s output. This is a very desirable piece today because of its practicality and tone. It would be worthy of reissue. This is a fine song, among his best, but it has an unexceptional Vibratone sound. From all appearances, the only thing most people know about the Vibratone is that it was played on “Cold Shot”, and probably they all learned it from the same sources.
I suspect these sources are the original Line-6 Flextone user’s manual which was completely wrong in its description of the Vibratone; fortunately, recent manuals lack this description , the SRV FAQ , or perhaps the Guitar Player interview with Vaughn.
The main reason is it’ll no longer sound dull in the middle of the keyboard with sub-fund drawbars pulled all the way out. The bass sub-fund drawbar tends to drown everything out. The old wax capacitors deteriorate with age especially after 30 odd years and their value increases. It’s the same for C3 and B3 Hammonds.

Since I receive a lot of Email asking about the differences between them, I would like to offer the following to clarify some technical points, and for historical perspective. I will have to try the solid state relays. The fact is they are so alike that a can be converted into a by simply swapping the amps. But, the similarity ends there. Forget the obvious things like the same driver, woofer and crossover, tubes – ‘s, the 0C3 v regulator tube, 12AU7’s 1 in a ; 2 in a , etc.
They are two different amp designs for two different purposes, based around the same chassis with somewhat similar intended uses. They are supposed to act and sound differently! The ‘s “balanced line” input was originally designed to match the balanced-line output of early HAMMOND organs and as a means to keep 60 hz hum down for motor switching requirements. The early Leslie 22H and later cabinets were made specifically for this reason.
The tone cabinet’s 15″ woofer added bottom to the sound. As clarification, a can be used with a G-G terminal organ using one G terminal and ground , but it’s tonal characteristics were designed to perform for a completely market segment — unbalanced-line organs made by many manufacturers, including HAMMOND. There was no alterior motive here or exotic design philosophy.
Instead, I use an old Korg CX3 – it comes pretty close on some things. The LowPro obviously kicks up the lows a great deal. This pic comes from this music store where this rig is for sale. We have noticed a very high amount of bad wiring in Hammond consoles and in tone cabinet/Leslie cables. Most of the old wiring is rubber insulated which deteriorates over .
The wheels were notched according to pitch, and an electromagnetic pickup much like that on an Electric Guitar sensed those notches and rendered a musical note. The Drawbars combined those harmonic tones to produce the inimitable Hammond Organ sound. When a note is played, the tones pass, just as water through a faucet. The random starts of each wave played allow for phase interaction, producing the rich tone so prized in the vintage Hammonds.
Each Digital Tonewheel can be voiced for Volume, Timbre, Motor Noise and Leakage; enabling the musician to tailor the Modern Hammond to match the characteristics of any Vintage Hammond, or to create their own vision. At our website, You may now download and install custom Tonewheel sets provided by some of our Artists, as well as other vintage Hammond Organs as cloned by our in-house expert staff.
Adopting the harmonic standards and nomenclature of the Pipe Organ, Mr. This variation gave the musician millions of combinations of harmonics, and assured that every Hammond player would be able to summon a unique voice. An extra level to the expression a Hammond Organist had at their fingertips was added because the Drawbars could be manipulated in real time. The Sk Series features real drawbars in the size, shape and configuration of Vintage Hammonds.
The Drawbars also serve the Combo and Pipe Organ divisions, but with a slightly different function.

You must know this if you are looking at this review, but Leslie cabinets are unique because they have a rotating tweeter which gives Hammond organs it’s signature sound. I’ve used the Leslie with a Hammond C3 organ. You can control the tweeter in terms of if you want it to be rotating or not, but beyond that there’s no real parameters to work with beyond volume control.
Some Leslie cabinets have been modded over the years, but the that I’ve used was standard. A manual isn’t necessary for use with the , but perhaps you might want one for the organ you’re using it with if you’re feeling lost. It sounds great through this speaker, but unless you have a few Leslies set up next to each other to shoot out, it’s hard to tell what’s the speaker and what’s the organ itself.
Having said this, the sounds as good as any other Leslie cabinet that I’ve used before with other Hammond organs.

Most answers here focus on getting the best kind of Hammond sound or actually any for recordings or a P. But there is another consideration I have not seen mentioned here yet, and that is that an essential part of what is perceived as “the Hammond sound” is a rotating Leslie speaker. And it looks like one, too, so the Hammond organ players in rock bands tend to look quite out of style with their living-room furniture-style organ.
With regard to the sound, the rotating Leslie speaker makes most of the difference, and here is the main thing: Nothing sounds like a live Leslie speaker in reasonable vicinity. You can perfectly replicate a recording of a Leslie speaker.
Re: Nord C1 Leslie hookup questions by tacitus» 15 May , And just for clarity, yes, pin 1 on the 9-pin is ground for audio and the half-moon control, pin 2 is signal in, 6 is the fast control for the rotary, 7 is the slow control, and 8 and 9 are the AC lines going to the speaker.
Also installed is a Bill Brown BB organ active EQ, reverb, two Leslie switches, a foot switch for the Leslie speeds on the expression pedal and a hot switch to put the left hand bass punch to the pedals. The Leslie switches, reverb, EQ and hot switch are not shown in the pics as this picture was taken before installing anything.
First a look at the finished organ This B3 is one out of between and of it’s kind ever made and that’s because the generator has no “RC” network. This only happened for the first few months in TThis organ had only been moved 3 times in it’s life and one of those times was to bring it here. The organ never had a Leslie hookup and the switch you see hanging there is temporary until I decide on a duo switch setup.
